Ask for the specified product and complete assembly. A product label alone does not establish the finished wall’s performance.
Start with a room-by-room material brief
CertainTeed separates drywall products into families addressing moisture, noise and fire resistance. Those categories help frame a discussion; they do not choose the right product for an unknown existing wall.

| Project condition | Question for the responsible designer or contractor |
|---|---|
| A dry interior wall | Which board, thickness and supporting construction are specified? |
| An existing repair | What board and layers are present, and how will the new surface meet the old? |
| A bathroom or tile area | What substrate and moisture-management system does the actual application require? |
| A ceiling | What product and support conditions are specified for this ceiling? |
| A wall with a fire or sound requirement | Which complete assembly and detail apply, and who confirms the repair preserves them? |
Keep a rated assembly intact
UL explains that fire-resistance ratings apply to complete assemblies, with components installed in the specified way. An individual sheet does not carry the completed assembly’s hourly rating. For a rated wall or ceiling, have the responsible professional identify the applicable design and permitted materials before substitution or repair.

- Ask for the drawing or assembly reference, where one applies.
- Identify who checks the existing construction against that detail.
- Have changes in board, layers, openings or other components reviewed by the responsible person.
- Keep the approved material information with the project record.
Describe the exposure, not just the room name
A bathroom wall outside a wet area and a substrate directly behind a shower finish raise different questions. Show the exact location, planned covering and relevant drawings. Ask who specifies the backing, waterproofing and adjoining details rather than ordering a board by colour.
Record substitutions before material arrives
If the specified board is unavailable, ask for the proposed alternative in writing. The useful comparison includes the intended application and assembly requirements—not just sheet size or purchase price. Name the person who can accept the change.
- Record the specified product and the surface it serves.
- Identify the proposed alternative and reason for the change.
- Confirm who reviews compatibility with the project requirements.
- Update the scope, material record and any price or schedule effect before proceeding.
Surrey: use records as a lead to the detail, not a board specification
Surrey offers copies of permits and building inspection notes through its records service.

Existing records may help the project team identify what information to seek about a wall. They do not let an owner certify the present board or concealed layers from an old description. Ask the responsible person to verify the assembly and specify the replacement material before ordering.
- List the available record and the surface it is thought to describe.
- Mark missing board identification, layer or support details as questions for assessment.
- Keep any proposed product change tied to a written acceptance by the responsible designer or project lead.
A few practical questions.
Can I identify the right board by its colour?
Use the actual product identification and specification. Share any existing drawings or readable labels with the contractor, but do not disturb the wall to find them. Ask the responsible person to confirm the required product and assembly.
Is a thicker sheet automatically an upgrade?
Not on its own. Ask how the proposed board fits the supporting construction, existing surface, required assembly and adjoining details. A change should solve a stated project requirement and be accepted by the responsible person.
